Supra

Overview:

Supra, like its neighbor Mariscos, is a bit out of the way.  Located between Logan and Mt. Vernon, north of downtown and south of Shaw it can be easy to forget.  So, we are reminding you that it is really good, and it offers a cuisine of global prestige, Georgian, that is barely represented in D.C.

The cooking is hearty, as you would expect from a land dominated by mountains.  Classic kebabs and doughy dumplings, whole roast chickens and soups are anchors.  Khachapuri, the cheesy dough-boats, are also on the menu, and not a complete gut-bomb if you split it among friends.  But thing we keep returning for are the spreads, now done in a sampler platter.  The menu rolls over.  The thick risotto with peas in the summer is now a mushroom.  Even simple sounding dishes can surprise. Early on one winner was a simple kidney bean salad with a dressing of crushed walnuts and herbs (Lobio Nigvzit).  It is simple and delicious.  It is easy to imagine sitting on a sunny mountain pass, eating it from a jar, while standing sentinel against neo-Soviet aggression.

Georgian wines, a justified point of pride for the country, are front and center.  They have taken the time to build out a strong list with choices that are more familiar to U.S. palates and some that will be more interesting – boarding on challenging.

The restaurant has two wings, in addition to covered outside seating.  On one end is the long main dining room with views up to the street level along the long set of windows.  The other view is the kitchen. The other wing is the bar, which is around the corner from the dining room, with no direct view.  In the bar are low and high tables snatched-up first-come manner.  So, if the dining room is booked you can still eat well.  Even if you don’t get the Khachapuri, you will leave satisfied.

Other Guidance:  The restaurant is at street level with slight ramps inside.  Vegetarians and GF can do okay, but need to ask for guidance.  It is a nice spot, but fancy attire definitely not required to fit in.
