Overview:
Maketto is unique. It is also such a great neighborhood spot that it seems like nearly everyone would like to go. It is a place to hang out, a place to gather, and a place to eat very serious food.

It is pan-Asian in approach with the two barbells being Cambodian and Taiwanese cuisine. The star dish since opening is the five-spice fried chicken, and it still holds up based on our recent visit with a half chicken encased in deep golden, thick crust. Other standouts on that visit include a cucumber salad with chili crisp and doughy bao buns. The menu is flexible to facilitate everything from snacking at the bar to family-dinner-style feasting. The communal nature of the space means that the beverage program, cocktails, wine and beer, has to be strong, and it is.

From the street, Maketto’s size is hidden. It stretches over two floors plus an outdoor courtyard. Keep the various spaces in mind if you are looking to host a party. During the day, part of the space converts to a café for coffee and pastries. Maketto was part of a wave of restaurants that opened in the post-2009 comeback starting roughly in 2012. Many of those are now gone, and we are likely to lose more as leases come up for renewal. As always, we suggest you support what you want to see survive, and that should include Maketto.

Other Guidance: Entrance at street level, but many internal steps to navigate the whole space. Vegetarians and GF can do well.
