NOTE: Rosedale closed in late 2025 (sadly). Will soon be a coastal Indian spot from the same restaurant group.
Overview:
D.C. restaurateur Ashok Bajaj continues a post-covid trend of going where the people are. In the work-from-home world that means getting out of downtown for his new place and up to the residential neighborhood of Van Ness. The result is a nice but not fussy spot with a big bar a warm space to gather.

The food matches the feel. Rosedale is doing dishes that echo the classic farm to table dining of a few years back – in the best way. The menu is under the direction of Frank Ruta. Ruta, of legendary Palena, and most recently at Bajaj’s fancy Dupont spot Annabelle. Ruta is now the culinary director for the whole restaurant group and has designed a menu at Rosedale that is (relatively) affordable, seasonal, and familiar.

There are two anchors to the menu. One is a half roast chicken that was intended to be the star, and lives up to billing. The other anchor is a selection of pizzas, large enough to split if supplemented with other sides. The pizza is thin but crispy, more Paradiso than 2 Amys. Rounding out the menu are expected items like a flat iron steak, salmon and another rotating fish dish, pastas and salads. The ingredients are sourced from farms in the greater region and prepared in straight-forward manner.

The wine list is global and reasonably priced. A short beer list leans toward craft and local. Lo/No options are available in addition to a familiar looking list of cocktails. Service is sharp out of the gate. As we noted with Mallard, having an established restaurant group does seem to help get staff up to speed quickly.

Rosedale works as a proper sit-down restaurant as well as a place to grab a drink and split an order of fries or pizza at the bar. For many of Bajaj’s restaurants it seemed like he was trying to fill a culinary gap in the collection – Indian, check; Italian, check; French, check; Mediterranean, check. With Rosedale, he appears to be looking to fill the need of the neighborhood. It is working for both sides of that equation.
Other Guidance: Located at street level, with no interior steps. GF and vegetarians have options. Twenty percent service charge included, if you care about such things (and you shouldn’t).
