Lupo Osteria Palisades

Some of the best Italian on the west side of Rock Creek is happening in a low-key spot in the Palisades where locals wander in to sit at the bar or gather around tables upstairs and down.  This offshoot of the reliable Lupo Verde on 14th Street, started strong and settled into a comfortable spot.  It is worth keeping in mind if you are over that way.

The menu leans toward the fried, cheesy, and carb-y.  The fried artichokes are large pieces, complete with stem, fried and served with a tangy green sauce.  The arancini are crispy large balls with gooey centers.  Burrata, crositini, fritto misto, and eggplant parmesan all dot the antipasti list.  There are a couple salads to help balance out the indulgence.  They have a few pizzas on the list, but if you are looking for carbs we would lean toward the pastas.  The large piece of short rib atop lightly sauced pappardelle with peas and cherry tomatoes was more balanced than you might expect.  The risotto with mushrooms, though heavy on cheese, also had a brightness to it.  A few entrees round out the menu, with a sizable chicken parm, fish and beef options.

The desserts are classic offerings like tiramisu, bombolini, panna cotta, and chocolate cake. The wine list has some depth for a neighborhood spot and leans Italian.  The bar also covers its bases with some grappa, amaro, in addition to more standard whiskies and clear spirits.

The opening chef went on to open Stellina Pizzerias around town, but some of his original dishes remain and the kitchen seems in good hands. A few outdoor seats out front weather permitting.  A market in the basement where a chef’s table (the centerpiece of the opening concept) can be reserved.  It adds up a good, charming neighborhood spot.

Other Guidance:  The restaurant is in a converted row home with many steps. Vegetarians can find a bunch of options, but vegans will have a harder time.  GF can hunt for options, but gluten is at the heart of the menu.  It is a nice neighborhood spot, no need to dress up, but it is not out of place.
