Overview:
Equinox carved out a reputation as a fine dining power spot around the corner from the White House. Over time it also added a reputation for doing right by those looking for plant-based options, including a vegan brunch. Then in 2023, after more than two decades, it lifted and shifted the operation over a few blocks to 19th St.
It is down a step in formality from the old spot. But the quality of the cooking remains strong as does the commitment to offering lots of non-meat options. On our visit to try out the new spot the best dish was mushrooms (and spinach) bathed in a deep stock held in a pastry exterior called Chanterelle Wellington. A la carte and tasting menu options are both available.
The space is huge reflecting its conversion from an Elephant & Castle (with the frosted glass iconography on the bathroom doors still in place). It has a large bar, something the old spot lacked. It may be a different feel, and fill a different niche, but it was the cooking that established Equinox’s reputation, and that remains.
Other Guidance: It is located at street level, though some dining areas require a step. GF can do well, and vegetarians obviously can do even better.
