In Georgetown, there is a chance even the alley will be chic. That is the case with Cady’s Alley, where Leopold’s Kafe & Konditorei is located. Wander past the fancy shops on either side until you come to an open patio and large glass windows (you can access from M Street too). The space is large, modern, and made for languishing. When the throngs annoy, this is an oasis so that you don’t feel so bad. You can linger over decent choices of caffeine or alcohol. They do well on savory food like salad and schnitzel (served with potato salad not noodle), but the soul of the place is classic Mitteleuropa pastries. For a meeting, or a snack or a meal, Leopold’s is worth dropping in on.

Washington Post: It looks like he beat up on them with one star many years ago, but has said nice things recently.
Washingtonian: Best of Brunch 2012; #74 in 2008 with a counter-intuitive take: “The long pastry case is filled with elaborate bombes and tortes, but the real draw at this Austrian-style kaffeehaus is the savories.”
Michelin: Plate rating – they are fans. Zagat-rated.
