Overview:

Federalist Pig made its name by taking barbecue seriously.  It expanded its space on Columbia Road for a larger indoor dining area, but it is still a simple, no-frills kind of spot.  It has also expanded the menu to include a lot more options – like creative and fun sandwiches, but it is the classic meat and sides that pulls us back.

Rob Sonderman is the pitmaster – though it is a gas-enhanced smoker without the pit.  The food is very good.  The ribs shineIn an early visit by the Texas Monthly BBQ editor, the ribs and burnt ends were the winner that placed at the top of his list (of one) for D.C. The brisket, wings and pulled pork are solid Though, it should be noted that in Carman noted inconsistency in 2022 and he is not the only person we’ve heard that from.  Meat is served until it sells out for the night, and items do sell out. The turkey was surprisingly moist and a welcome break from the heavier options in the mix.  The sides are serious and good and all vegetarian, but note they are not shy on the spicing of items like Brussel sprouts and fries.

Drinks served in their original containers match the décor.  It is walk-up counter service or take-out.  If you are looking for a specific item, be aware that they do run out and when they are out that is it for the night.

Other Guidance:  Located at street level with no steps. GF can do well, and the ample vegetarian sides offer a surprising number of options for those skipping the meat, even if you can’t ignore the deep smoking meat smell.
