Overview:
DCity Smokehouse started small, but it was stepping into the giant void of good BBQ in D.C. Despite not employing a traditional smoker – always a difficulty for urban spots – it garnered attention and propelled pitmaster Rob Sonderman to prominence. After a few years, Sonderman would leave to open Federalist Pig. DCity would eventually move to a larger location nearby on Florida Ave., and a couple years ago, with a boost from the city, would expand to a second location in Anacostia.
For true connoisseurs, grading BBQ is a high art that gives wine critics a run for their money. We tend to fall into the simple eater category, and for us DCity remains a good, reliable choice to scratch your hankering for classic meats and sides, plus packed sandwiches. The wings are traditionally a strong option. Tim Carman in the Post praised the brisket and ribs early on, and the turkey and rib tips on his Washington Post: Tim was an early fan, and also did a very nice write-up for the Anacostia location.
. But we should note, he, like others, noticed inconsistencies. But our most recent take-out sampling was good across the board.
Both locations have outdoor seating. The Anacostia location added a whiskey bar.
Other Guidance: Both locations are at street level, though some small steps may be involved. There are several veggie sides, but it’s a meat-eaters place.
