Overview:
Takara 14 is a great neighborhood gem. It has gotten some nods and publicity, but it deserves more. The brainchild of owner Jenistar Ruksirisopha, it does Japanese in a fun, cute, sunny setting on the second-floor space previously occupied by Baan Thai. It is worth remembering and taking a little walk further down 14th.

The menu has multiple categories, giving the false impression that it is a sprawling list. In fact, each group has a few focused items that the kitchen is turning out with skill. The dishes can range from the familiar to the slightly unexpected, like a tuna tartare with honey gochujang and granny smith apple with seaweed tempura chips for scooping. The bowls are a few variations of raw fish, eel, or beef over rice or yaki udon noodle bowls of seafood or vegetables. The heart of the, though, is sushi. Ruksirisopha recruited Johnny Yi, who comes with a long resume including a stint at Sushi Nakazawa, to run the program. In addition to select pieces, apparently sourced from Japan, they have several rolls that are layered yet elegant in nature.

The spaces has been redecorated, but largely remains the same with a front dining room, large bar toward the back, and an upstairs space. It is a great place to meet up, have a low-key date night, and to sample some really good food. A worthy occupant to take over the location.

Other Guidance: Vegetarians and GF can do well. Note the stairs to get to the restaurant.
