On Saturdays, we tend to draw attention to art. Today it is this statue of General John “Black Jack” Logan in Logan Circle. Historical fact discovered going down the rabbit hole is Logan Circle’s original name was Iowa Circle.
Logan was a “political general” in the Civil War, having been a member of congress from Illinois prior to the war. He is also considered one of the more effective generals. After the war he would help found and eventually lead an organization of Union Army veterans called The Grand Army of the Republic.
On March 3, 1868, he issued Grand Army of the Republic General Order No. 11, calling for a national day of remembrance for the Civil War dead, which is the origin of Memorial Day.
