Overview:
Open Crumb moved from its original location in Anacostia to H Street. From its new location, it continues to do a great take-out-friendly West African.

The cooking is done from scratch. As Chef Peter Opare told WCP about the approach for the first spot, “Our food is prepared from raw ingredients, and our bread and desserts are all made in house.” The jollof rice is from a family recipe. Peter’s family ran Ghana Café for years. The family recipes means it derives from the best source of great comfort food. It also takes the form, with many of dishes stewed until the flavors meld and build. These include chicken, goat and black eyed peas as mains, but also sides. There are two different takes on rice, jollof and a Ghanian version with black eyed peas and millet leaves. The comfort foods extends to soups and a beef patty in pastry. It may sound heavy, but it is lighter than you might think and not too much for a warm night. For something with a little more punch, the Suya chicken is coated in a spicy peanut sauce. The mains come with rice and a side (spinach, corn salad, or plantains on one of our meals, but the menu does change frequently).

Not currently on the menu is the chicken sandwich that became a bit of a phenom at the original location, apparently a result of a paring back the more American dishes. We are glad to see them keep going. It is primarily take-out, but they do have a few tables with an enclosed space. We suggest you add them to your rotation.
Other Guidance: GF and vegetarians – even vegans – can do well.
