Overview:

Places with “buzz” in nonorganic developments like the Wharf extension draw skepticism from us.  Fish Shop is located at the very end of the Wharf past the other high-end, chain-y places, basically across the street from Arena Stage (and close to the Metro!).  It is the second version of a relatively new and hyped spot in Scotland. Fish Shop overcame default wariness, primarily for two reasons: Angie Duran and Ria Montes. 

Chef Ria Montes was recently at Estuary where she brought the place back to life, at least for culinary purposes, by injecting Filipino elements into the menu.  Here, she is following a New American/Farm-to-Table approach.  The dishes, even a couple months in, are evolving with the season and her imagination.  Rockfish topped with lardo over creamy rice and peas is Chesapeake meets Italy.  Locally-sourced Smoked trout initially was plated over crumpets, but by the time we got there it was cold fingerlings in dill dressing.  The food is interesting and well-conceived, but also approachable like a large sleeves of squid escabeche under tiny cubed veggies in a deep dark red oil.  At least one meat choice round out the entrée options – fear not carnivores.  A vegetarian option was also present on our last visit.

General Manager Angie Duran held down the front of the house at Centrolina before opening the delightful wine bar Bottles.  Here, she overseas an operation spread over a huge dining room and large patio space, but with a staff already hitting its stride.  Artistic touches counter the concrete.  The team behind the restaurant group has ties to a modern gallery.  They even commissioned a tartan pattern just for this location.  The wine list also reflects her touch, deep with good and interesting options.

We look forward to coming back, but right out of the gate, we are impressed enough to add it to our recommended list.  As the Wharf fades in culinary importance, it is good to have something worthwhile being added.

Other Guidance:  It is a modern building at street level, though the bathroom is in an awkward spot. GF can do well, vegetarians okay.  No need to dress up, but if you want to match the food you can.
