Stable

Overview:

The cozy spot on H Street has adapted to keep going.  In winter, it continues the Swiss-centered menu including one of the few (only?) places around here where you can get raclette.  For the past couple years, they have made a switch to a steak frites joint in the spring/summer months.

The winter menu makes it a destination; the summer one matches its reputation of being a great neighborhood spot. We have sampled a couple non-raclette dishes over the years, and the kitchen has been consistently reliable.  Options include hearty fare like potato rosti, venison, vol au vent, plus lighter choices like fish or veggies.  For a tiny spot on H Street, it punches above its weight.  As for the raclette, for the uninitiated, is cheese slabs melted on an electric stove in the middle of the table.  The cheese is then poured over potatoes and other accoutrements.  Their website notes: “If you would like to indulge in Stable’s Raclette experience, please call ahead of time to reserve your Raclette Table. The Raclette requires 24 hours notice.”

Once you make your way past the narrow greeting area and bar, the space opens up in the back to a Swiss farmhouse themed large, open room with a high vaulted ceiling.  It all seems a world away from the grittiness outside where you can escape to a communal space of warmed smiling faces. Outdoor space is also available, but that will be less removed from H Street.

Other Guidance:  It is a cozy space with some steps.  It is a challenge for vegans with either a meat or cheese focus year-round.
